Nájera to Calzadilla de la Cueza
From Nájera with its "Santa Maria la Real" monastery, the pilgrimage route leads through gently undulating countryside to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, known for the famous chicken miracle.
The province of Burgos is reached in Redecilla del Camino. The ascent to the Goose Mountains (Montes de Oca) takes the pilgrims to the Castilian plateau.
Burgos is the stop for our rest day - enough time for a stroll through the town and to visit the impressive Gothic cathedral. After Burgos, the Way of St. James runs through the Meseta, which impresses with its simple beauty and the intense play of colors and leads us to the destination of this pilgrimage, Calzadilla de la Cueza.

Individual journey to Bilbao airport. From there, transfer together to the Camino de Santiago to Nájera (approx. 140 km), check into your room, get to know each other, get in the mood for the Camino, possibly visit the town.
Today, as on every pilgrimage day, we offer a spiritual start to the day. Hike through the vineyards to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where you can visit the cathedral with its hen and cockerel. (22 km - easy to moderately difficult hike)
Today, the Way of St. James runs parallel to the N210 national road for many kilometers (albeit at some distance) over gentle hills and through some typical Castilian villages to Belorado. After Grañon, you leave Rioja and enter the province of Burgos (Castilla y León). (23.5 km - medium difficulty)
Hike in the plain and later up into the Goose Mountains (Montes de Oca) until the Way of St. James finally reaches the very small village of San Juan de Ortega with its famous monastery. (24.6 km - medium difficulty)
Hike over the heights of Atapuerca and later to Burgos. Possibility to walk the much more pleasant and beautiful alternative route along the river Arlanzón, then approx. 2 km more. (25.3 km - small hill at the start, then easy)
Free day in Burgos with the opportunity to visit the city. The Gothic cathedral of Burgos is one of the highlights of the Way of St. James in Spain.
Hike out of Burgos on the Meseta (Castilian plateau) to the typical Way of St. James village of Hornillos del Camino, which has only developed along one road. (19.5 km - easy)
Hike via Hontanas and through the ruins of the Antonite monastery to Castrojeriz, one of the longest places on the Way of St. James. (21.5 km - easy)
Over the Alto de Mostelares table mountain and past the chapel of San Nicolás to Boadilla del Camino. After crossing the bridge over the Pisuerga, you leave the province of Burgos and enter the province of Palencia. (19.3 km - one-way stage)
Walk along the Canal de Castilla via Frómista with the beautiful Romanesque church of San Martín and continue on the "pilgrims' highway" to Villalcázar de Sirga. (19.2 km - easy)
Hike to Calzadilla de la Cueza. On what is probably the most impressive part of the Meseta, the route continues straight ahead across the treeless and shadeless plateau to Calzadilla, which is hidden in a hollow until the very end. (22.4 km - easy)
Day 12 - Calzadilla de la Cueza - Bilbao - Journey home

* Transfer from the airport to the Way of St. James: We specify an arrival time (and departure time) at one of the main airports for the Way of St. James. You travel independently until this time and we organize the transfer to the Way of St. James (or back). ** Half board: Meals generally start with dinner on the day of arrival and end with breakfast on the day of departure. Exceptions: Meals on the rest days in Burgos (Tour 2), León (Tour 3) and Fisterra (Tour 5) are not included in the tour price and are self-organized. Catering on Tour 4 ends with dinner on the day of arrival in Santiago. *** No support from the tour guide on rest days and days off. The tour guide does not walk with the pilgrims on the Way of St. James on the pilgrimage days, but organizes the luggage transport and can be reached with the support vehicle in case of emergencies.
This offer is a pilgrimage group tour planned and organized by Pilgino. Breakfast and dinner are taken together. There is also a voluntary "start of the day" every morning by the tour guide for the whole group. Pilgrims are not necessarily required to walk in a group, but can choose their own pace and the intervals between breaks.
The tour guide does not go on pilgrimage with the participants, but drives the support vehicle, takes care of luggage transportation and can be contacted by telephone if necessary. Our tour guides are themselves experienced pilgrims who are happy to help and advise the participants.
The minimum number of participants for our group tours is usually 8 people. If this number is not reached at least 4 weeks before the start of the tour, Pilgino has the right to cancel the tour. In this case, you will receive a full refund of your deposit or the tour price already paid.
